The Canadian Studies Program is focused on the interdisciplinary study of Canada. Whether students choose to qualify for a Specialist, a Major or a Minor, they take the same few core courses. These courses offer a broad perspective on Canadian society and culture, including such themes as: multiculturalism, ethnicity, aboriginal concerns, nationalism, regionalism and gender issues. Material is drawn from traditional books as well as from current media.

In addition to the interdisciplinary core courses, students may choose from a broad range of courses on Canada from such disciplines as history, sociology, fine art, film, literature, economics and political science. Courses from such programs as Women's Studies and Cinema Studies can also be used to round out a student's study of Canada.

A Specialist or Major in Canadian Studies is an excellent preparation for careers in such areas as: journalism, the visual media, government, law, positions in Canadian cultural institutions and education. A Minor in Canadian Studies can be a useful extra qualification for students taking a Major in a related field.

Students are encouraged to take part in the active Canadian Studies Student Union, which initiates social and other events, such as film series and speakers series. A student exchange with the University of Calgary allows students to spend a year in that region of Canada with some expenses paid and full credit for courses taken there.

There is an essay contest, open to all students enrolled in a Canadian Studies course, for the best interdisciplinary essay on a Canadian subject with $1,500. Applications for the program should be made to your Registrar. The Program Director is available to help put together your own group of courses.
