How to Find Journal Articles

Select an Index

Journal articles are not listed in the library catalogue. To find articles on a topic or by an author you need to use an index. An index is a searchable database of citations to articles published in a field.

Choose an index to search.

  1. Start from the University of Toronto Library Home Page at: http://www.library.utoronto.ca/
    Library Homepage
  2. Select 'Find articles by subject'
  3. Choose one of the subject areas listed on the page.
  4. Choose one of the indexes listed on the page.

Some tips to remember

  • The results you get from searching an index are only as good as your search strategy. If you are unhappy with your results from an index try using different search terms or ask a librarian for help.
  • No index is perfect or comprehensive. You may need to search multiple indexes to find the information you need.
  • Not all citations in an index will link to the full text of the article. If there is no full text link try searching for the journal in the library catalogue.

Access from Home
