Platanthera orbiculata (Pursh) Lindley

(Large Round-leaved Orchid)

Both varieties, var. orbiculata and var. macrophylla (Goldie) Luer, occur in Muskoka, sometimes at the same sites. Some authors have proposed that both varieties be recognized as distinct species. Usually in mesic to wet-mesic sites in old growth mixed woods dominated by Sugar Maple, Yellow Birch and Eastern Hemlock, often close to streams or near the edges of swamps. Often growing in thick duff, sometimes in small depressions. Very rarely in sphagnum moss in wooded portions of Black Spruce bogs. Peak bloom in late July and early August. Both varieties are uncommon in Muskoka.
