Usually in full to partial shade, almost always in wet coniferous or boggy woods dominated by Eastern White Cedar, sometimes with Balsam Fir and/or Black Spruce. One historic report was from an "alder swamp". Usually growing in moss, leaf litter or rotting logs. Peak bloom in July. Uncommon in Muskoka.
