In open areas to nearly full shade, in a variety of moist to wet sites including floodplains, shores, bogs, ditches beside roads and railways, old fields, and abandoned sand and gravel pits. Peak bloom in early to mid July. A fickle species that may be abundant at a site one year and absent the next. Fairly common in Muskoka.
