In Muskoka District this species is represented by one or more infraspecific taxa that are described below.
- var. herbiola (R.Br.) Luer
Known Muskoka occurrences limited to the Moon River and Sparrow Lake.
On river floodplains in full sun to nearly full shade.
The Moon River sites are small sandy beaches where colonies of up to 80 plants may be found growing with Round-leaved Sundew, Lance-leaved Violet, Club-spur Orchid, Blue Flag, Virginia Meadow-beauty, Royal Fern, Meadowsweet, Tall Cord Grass and Panicum r.
The Sparrow Lake sites are on peaty mounds at the bases of clumps of soft maples in swampy deciduous lakeside woods.
Has been reported from the Simcoe County side of the Severn River at Big Chute and should be looked for in nearby parts of Muskoka.
Peak blooming date is mid to late July.
Uncommon in Ontario and rare in Muskoka, where it is very much threatened by waterfront development.
