Herbaria are collections of pressed, dried, and labelled plant specimens that are kept in systematic order. The information on the label includes not only the name of the species, but also where the specimen was collected, when, and by whom. As a result, herbarium collections contain information about the distribution, frequency, and abundance of species, and whether these parameters have changed over time. The specimens in herbaria are also used in taxonomic and ecological studies. This page lists the acronyms (Holmgren et al. 1990) of herbaria containing specimens on which the Muskoka Checklist is based.
