Many species have associated with them an English common name, in addition to their scientific name. The common names of the plants in this checklist are listed below. Note that since not every plant has a common name, not every species in the checklist is listed here. More importantly, the same common name may apply to more than one species, and a single species may have more than one common name. For these reasons, among others, scientific names have the advantage that they can be understood unambiguously around the world.
