APPOINTMENTS
Harvey Skinner has been appointed Chair, Department of Public Health Sciences, and Chair, Graduate Department of Community Health, both for five-year term effective July 1, 1998 and ending June 30, 2003.
HONORS AND AWARDS
Mark Bernstein (Department of Surgery) has received the 1998 R. Fleming Surgical Educator Award of the Division of Neurosurgery.
Robin Boushey (surgical scientist trainee and Ph.D. candidate, Institute of Medical Science, supervisor - Dan Drucker, Department of Medicine) has won the Society for Clinical Investigation 1998 Trainee Award. The award will be presented at the CSCI/Royal College Meeting in September 1998.
John Chamberlain (Department of Immunology) has been promoted to Associate Professor effective July 1, 1998.
Dan Drucker (Department of Medicine) has received a two-year Canadian Diabetes Association grant for his project, "Roles of GLP-1, FIP and leptin in glucose homeostasis".
Aditya Gupta (Department of Medicine) has been promoted to Associate Professor effective July 1, 1998.
Sender Herschorn (Department of Surgery) was awarded the 1998 Paul Zimskind Award for continuing excellence and leadership in the field of neurourology by the Urodynamics Society at the Annual Meeting on May 30, 1998, in San Diego, California.
Arlette Lefebvre (Department of Psychiatry) has been awarded The Easter Seal Society's Silver Meritorious Service Award for her "extraordinarily valuable services on behalf of children with physical disabilities". The award was presented at the Society's Annual General Meeting on May 27, 1998.
Bob Richardson has won the Department of Medicine's 1998 Teaching Award and Kathy Siminovitch has won the Department of Medicine's 1998 Research Award.
Rayfel Schneider (Department of Pediatrics) is the winner of the 1998 Dean A.L. Chute Award (The Silver Shovel). This award was instituted by the graduating class of 1954 and re-issued by the Medical Society in 1973, when it was re-named in honour of Dean A.L. Chute. It is awarded annually by the Medical Society on behalf of the Year Four class to the undergraduate teacher deemed by the class to be the best clinical teacher in the second and third years.
1998 TENURE DECISIONS ANNOUNCED
President Prichard has announced the granting of tenure at the rank of associate professor to the following members of our Faculty, effective July 1, 1998: Michael Escobar (Department of Public Health Sciences), Louise Lemieux Charles (Department of Health Administration), Ann Robertson (Department of Public Health Sciences), Linda Wilson-Pauwels (Division of Biomedical Communications, Department of Surgery).
1998 HOLLINGTON AWARDS
Bob Murray (Department of Biochemistry) and Stephen Shumak (Department of Medicine) are the recipients of the 1998 E. Mary Hollington Awards which recognize excellence in undergraduate medical education. Bob won the award given to a faculty member who has taught with distinction in the pre-clinical or basic science portion of the undergraduate program. The other award, presented to a teacher who has demonstrated excellence in clinical teaching, was given to Stephen Shumak. The recipients are selected by the fourth year class and the awards are presented at the annual Medical Alumni Association banquet for the graduating class held immediately prior to their convocation.
TRANSGENIC KNOCK-OUT SERVICE
The Faculty's Transgenic Knock-Out Service, which has experienced some technical difficulties, is now up and running again. The results of intensive testing performed over the last several months indicate that the previous problems are now solved. The service, performed in collaboration with the Ontario Cancer Institute and the Department of Medical Biophysics, is located at the SPF facility at the Ontario Cancer Institute. Investigators who are interested in using the service are encouraged to apply. There will be a charge of $800 for each DNA construct or EC cell sample. Requests for service will require authorization of the Faculty Research Office. 1998 CONVOCATION DAY
Convocation for 1998 Faculty of Medicine undergraduates will take place on Friday, June 19. Physical Therapy graduates start the day at 10:00 a.m. with a Pre-Convocation Ceremony for graduates, guests and faculty in the quadrangle at Hart House. Valedictorian speeches are given, student awards are announced, and a light lunch is served. The event is hosted by the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Alumni Association. All faculty are invited to attend the pre-convocation reception and the convocation ceremony.
For graduates of our undergraduate medical program, the day begins at 10:30 a.m. with the Pre-Convocation Ceremony at Convocation Hall, where the graduates will recite "The Revised Oath of Hippocrates" and some will receive special recognition in the form of scholarships, prizes and awards. All Chairs and interested faculty members are welcome to attend the Pre-Convocation Ceremony. A noon hour luncheon will be served in the MSB cafeteria for graduates and guests.
At 2:30 p.m., all graduates of the Faculty of Medicine gather in Convocation Hall for the Convocation Ceremony beginning with the Procession. An Honorary Doctor of Laws will be conferred on Fred Lowy, Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Concordia University and former Dean of our Faculty, followed by the conferring of degrees - Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science (Physical Therapy), and our Diplomas and Certificates.
FACILITATING ETHICAL REVIEW OF HUMAN CLINICAL RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM
A symposium on the theme "Facilitating Ethical Review of Human Clinical Research - Challenges and Solutions, Industry and University Perspective" will be held on September 15, 1998, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Amphitheatre, The Toronto Hospital Residence. BROWN BAG ETHICS DISCUSSION
The next Brown Bag Ethics Discussion will feature Trudo Lemmens (Department of Psychiatry) leading a discussion stimulated by the attendees - "BYOT - Bring Your Own Topic". The group will choose several issues in research ethics to discuss. The discussion will be held from noon to 1.00 p.m. on Thursday June 25, 1998, in the Dean's Conference Room, Medical Sciences Building. The Brown Bag Ethics discussions, sponsored by the UofT Office of Research Services and the Faculty of Medicine Research Office, are open to all members of the health sciences research community. Bring your own lunch - coffee will be served.
1998 INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCE (IMS) SCIENTIFIC DAY
This year's IMS Scientific Day on April 14, 1998, featured the first annual Bernard Langer Annual Lecture in Health Sciences (sponsored by the IMS, the Department of Surgery, and Novartis Pharma Canada Inc.). This annual lecture was established in recognition of Bernard Langer's many contributions, particularly his leadership role in the education and training of clinician scientists. The inaugural Langer lecturer was Fritz Bach (Harvard Medical School).
At the Scientific Day, awards were presented to the following students.
- Vivek Rao (supervisor - Richard Weisel, Department of Surgery) won the Siminovitch-Salter Award, awarded annually to a recent graduate of the IMS who demonstrated outstanding scholarly contributions throughout the Ph.D. program.
- You Ming Lu (supervisor - John Roder, Department of Immunology) won the J.C. Laidlaw Prize--Basic Sciences.
- Joan Ivanov (supervisor - David Naylor, Department of Medicine) won the J.C. Laidlaw Prize--Clinical Sciences.
- Ally-Khan Somani (supervisor - Kathy Siminovitch, Department of Medicine) and Bryan Lo (supervisor - Mel Silverman, Department of Medicine) both received the J.C. Laidlaw Award of Excellence.
- Ian McGilvray (supervisor - Ori Rotstein, Department of Surgery) and Roger Kaprielian (supervisor - Peter Backx, Department of Medicine) both received the Laidlaw Prize Honourable Mention.
- David Hackam (supervisor - Ori Rotstein, Department of Surgery) won the Roncari Book Prize, presented annually to the IMS student who has made significant contributions to the academic experience of graduate students.
- Lena Serghides (supervisor - Kevin Kain, Department of Medicine) won The Alan Wu Poster Prize (Basic Science) - Per Lundmark (supervisor - Graham Trope, Department of Ophthalmology) won The Alan Wu Poster Prize (Clinical Sciences)
PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY RESEARCH PROGRAM
The Psychopharmacology Research Program has received funding from the Medical Research Council of Canada for the following studies: Claudio Naranjo (Department of Pharmacology) and co-investigators Usanda Busto (Department of Psychiatry) and I. Burhan Turksen (Faculty of Engineering) - a three-year grant for their project, "Predicting response to pharmacotherapy in alcohol dependence by using fuzzy logic: naltrexone and citalopram".
Beth Sproule (Faculty of Pharmacy and Department of Psychiatry) and co-investigators Ken Shulman (Department of Psychiatry), Claudio Naranjo (Department of Pharmacology), and I. Burhan Turksen (Faculty of Engineering) - a three-year grant for their project, "Fuzzy logic modelling of lithium kinetics and dynamics".
EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS
Education Grand Rounds on Thursday, June 18, 1998, (7:30 to 9:00 a.m., Cummings Auditorium, Women's College Hospital) will explore the topic, "Information, Self-Directed Learning and Change". Dr. Paul Mazmanian (Professor, Preventive Medicine and Community Health and Associate Dean, Continuing Medical Education, Virginia Commonwealth University) will present, with Dave Davis (Associate Dean, Continuing Education, UofT Faculty of Medicine) acting as moderator and Rick Frecker (Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education, UofT Faculty of Medicine) and Arthur Rothman (Head, Education Office, Department of Medicine) taking on the role of responders.
