CHAIR IN BIOETHICS

Sun Life Assurance Company has donated $1,000,000 to the Univer- sity of Toronto under the Matching Chair Program to establish the Sun Life Chair in Bioethics. This Chair will be occupied by the Director of the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics, a partnership of the University of Toronto, The Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, The Hospital for Sick Children, Mount Sinai Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Science Centre and The Toronto Hospital. Effective February 1997, Peter Singer (Department of Medicine), the current Director of the Joint Centre for Bioethics, will assume the Sun Life Chair in Bioethics.

RESEARCH INFORMATION SYSTEM

The University's Research Information System (RIS) is being rolled out. Together with department business officers and academic administrators, a number of our investigators have signed up to receive training on the use of the system. When the system is fully implemented, it will allow individual investiga- tors to have direct access to only their own research funding data. At present, the system does not have the mechanism to provide this privacy. Therefore, for the time being, individual investigators who wish to know their own current research funding situation can obtain up-to-date information from their department business officers. Recognizing that there could well be circumstances where an investigator may have a legitimate need to request access to the system at this stage, the Office of the Vice President, Research and International Relations requires that such requests must be approved by the Dean or the Dean's designate (in the Faculty of Medicine by Cecil Yip, Vice-Dean, Research, telephone 978-5150).

On display will be poster presentations by our undergraduate medical students - many of whom participated in the Summer Scholarship or MD/PhD Programs or undertook research projects during elective periods. The event will open with a talk by Gary Levy (Department of Medicine) on "New insights into the genetic basis of fulminant liver failure" in the Medical Sciences Building, Room 3153 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Immediately afterwards, students will present their posters in the Stone Lobby, Medical Sciences Building, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Each poster will be ranked independently by three faculty judges in one of three classes: 1. no previous research experience, 2. previous research experience or graduate degree and 3. MD/PhD.

Research is subdivided into basic and clinical categories. Last year's three winners - Ally-Khan Somani, Michael Heiber and Eric Chu (all Year 3 medical student) - will give oral presentations of their research from 4:30 to 5:30. Each year three winners are sent to the National Student Research Forum at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Michael Heiber was awarded first place for overall excellence in research at the U.S. meeting last year in April 1996. A wine and cheese reception will be held in the Alumni Lounge from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. where the winners will be announced.
