UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION

This issue is devoted to undergraduate medical education. Preparations are underway for the review of our undergraduate medical program by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) for accreditation in Spring, 1997. To assist in that process, this issue provides a basic overview of the role of Rick Frecker, the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education and the committees that advise him. ASSOCIATE DEAN, UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION

The Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education reports to the Vice-Dean, Education. Under the general supervision of the Vice-Dean, Education, the incumbent is ultimately responsible to the Dean for all aspects of planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the undergraduate medical education program.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities.
1. Is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the undergraduate medical education program, including curriculum content and faculty development related to undergraduate education.

2. Manages the Medical Undergraduate Education Office.

3. Develops, maintains and implements academic performance standards for undergraduate medical students and related teaching faculty, ensuring that the undergraduate medical education program conforms with the standards specified by the LCME/CACMS for maintaining accreditation.

4. Maintains regular contact with the Dean and senior academic colleagues as a member of the following:
a) Dean's Executive Committee
b) Education Deans' Committee
c) Sector Chairs' Committees
d) All Chairs' Committee

5. Chairs the following:
a) Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum Committee
b) Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum Council

6. Is an ex-officio member of various committees, including the following:
a) Medical Undergraduate Board of Examiners
b) Medical Education Committee of Faculty Council
c) Academy Directors' Committee
d) Pre-Clerkship Course Directors Committee
e) Clerkship Subject Supervisors' Committee
f) Curriculum Evaluation Committee
g) Undergraduate Faculty Development Committee
h) Curriculum Mapping Committee

7. Represents the Faculty of Medicine with respect to undergraduate medical education to external organizations such as AAMC, ACMC, CPSO, MCC, COFM and EFPO.

8.Sits on various hospital committees, including those related to undergraduate medical education.

UME CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Terms of Reference (Revised December 7, 1995)
The UME Curriculum Committee advises the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education on matters pertaining to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of undergraduate medical education. Matters on which the committee will provide advice include, but are not limited to: curriculum content and balance; faculty development; assessment and maintenance of academic standards of performance of undergraduate medical students and teaching faculty.

Membership: 1) Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (Chair); 2) Chair, Pre-Clerkship Course Directors Committee; 3) Chair, Clerkship Subject Supervisor Committee; 4) Chair, Academy Directors Committee; 5) Chair, Undergraduate Faculty Development Committee; 6) Chair, Program Evaluation Committee; 7) Professional Educator; 8) Chair, Student Curriculum Evaluation Committee; 9) Co-opted members at the discretion of the Associate Dean.

The Curriculum Committee reports annually to the Medical Education Committee of Faculty Council. The Curriculum Committee meets regularly (on a monthly basis), and at the call of the chair. Minutes are kept.

PROGRAM EVALUATION COMMITTEE

The Undergraduate Medical Education Program Evaluation Committee assesses the educational objectives of the undergraduate medical curriculum, and evaluates curricular outcomes in terms of these objectives. It examines overall curriculum content, teaching methodologies and approaches, and evaluates the balance of the undergraduate medical program.

STUDENT CURRICULUM EVALUATION COMMITTEE

The Student Curriculum Evaluation Committee, an elected committee of the Medical Students' Society, monitors the quality of undergraduate medical courses in regard to their organization, content, and quality of teaching. It also makes recommendations to the Curriculum Committee regarding curricular objectives and methods of assessment.

EXAMINATIONS AND STUDENT ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE

The Undergraduate Medical Education Examinations and Student Assessment Committee assists in developing policies, procedures, and standards for assessment of undergraduate medical students. It assists Course Directors in student evaluation, and advises the Curriculum Committee on matters relating to student examinations and assessment.

UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION COUNCIL

Terms of Reference (Revised December 7, 1995)

The Undergraduate Medical Education Council meets as a broadlyrepresentative advisory body to receive information and provide advice to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education, pertinent to the Undergraduate Medical Education Program. Its input is sought on matters pertaining to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of undergraduate medical education. Matters on which the council will provide advice include, but are not limited to: curriculum content and balance; faculty development; assessment and maintenance of academic standards of performance of undergraduate medical students and teaching faculty.

Membership: 1) Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (Chair); 2) Members of the Pre-Clerkship Course Committee; 3) Members of the Clerkship Subject Supervisor Committee; 4) Academy Directors; 5) Members Undergraduate Faculty Development Committee; 6) Members of the Program Evaluation Committee; 7) The Professional Educators; 8) Chair and Vice Chair, Student Curriculum Evaluation Committee; 9) Two elected student representatives from each medical undergraduate year; 10) Representative from Educating Future Physicians of Ontario (EFPO); 11) Vice Dean, Education; 12) Associate Dean, Student Affairs; 13) Associate Dean,

Postgraduate Medical Education (or designate); 14) Associate Dean, Continuing Medical Education (or designate); 15) Co-opted members appointed by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.

The Council meets once in the Fall and twice in the Spring of each academic year. Minutes are kept. Agenda items should be submitted to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.
