LIFEBEAT SUPPORTS OUR FACULTY

Lifebeat is the musical variety show that's written, produced and presented by talented health care professionals from our Faculty's teaching hospitals. This year, the proceeds from Lifebeat will be donated in support of Alzheimer's Disease research at our Faculty. You'll see another side of your colleagues in this highly professional and entertaining production that features dancers and musicians performing rock'n roll, jazz, barber shop and classical music. Lifebeat is eagerly anticipated by a growing circle of enthusiastic supporters, having grown from its first performance in a hospital cafeteria to packed houses at the Premiere Dance Theatre.

Lifebeat runs at the Premiere Dance Theatre (207 Queens Quay West at Harbourfront) from June 1-3, 1995. Tickets are $25 and $18 and may be purchased from the Premiere Dance Theatre Box Office at 973-4000. The Faculty is hosting an Opening Night Reception and tickets for this special event are $100 per person ($50 of which is tax receiptable), which includes the admission to the performance and to the reception. To purchase tickets for the Opening Night Reception, call Monica Lin at 978-5715.

TASK FORCE ON INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

At present, the University is involved in a number of international student exchange, study elsewhere and other international student programs. In order to ensure that these programs, and others that may be identified, are efficiently and effectively administered and developed, Carolyn Tuohy, Acting Vice-President and Provost, has established a Task Force to advise on the overall strategy that the University should follow in the area of international student exchange programs and to recommend policy and procedures. The Terms of Reference for the Task Force are:

1. Recommend a Statement of Principles for the University with regard to International Student Exchange Programs.
2. Identify existing student exchange programs at the University, Divisional and Departmental levels and their key contacts.
3. Consider the relationship between Student Exchange, Study Elsewhere and other International Student Programs.
4. Recommend appropriate approval procedures for new Exchange Programs.
5. Make recommendations on policy and procedures related to:
-Tuition, ancillary and exchange program fees
-Transfer Credit for courses taken at the host university
-Providing information on exchange programs and academic courses available at host universities to University of Toronto students
-Service to incoming exchange students
-Financial assistance
6. Recommend a structure and procedures for the efficient administration of Exchange Programs.

They should be directed by April 1, 1995 to: The Task Force Secretary, Office of the Vice-President and Provost, Room 221, Simcoe Hall. E-mail address: l.charpentier@utoronto.ca.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO FACULTY OF MEDICINE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH IN EDUCATION AT THE TORONTO HOSPITAL

At its meeting of February 27, 1995, Faculty Council approved the creation of a University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Centre for Research in Education at The Toronto Hospital. The Centre will serve as the focal point for education research in the Faculty. Envisaged is a Faculty of Medicine Centre at the Toronto Hospital linked with departmental educational personnel located elsewhere in the Faculty.

Its objectives are:

1. To promote and conduct research in medical education.
2. To attract peer review and other funding for research.
3. To facilitate innovations in all aspects of education for which the Faculty has responsibility.
4. To participate in graduate education in the disciplines of education.
5. To develop a cadre of future leaders in educational research, innovations and decision-making.
6. To foster a cooperative approach to education activities within and between sectors, departments, academies, and hospitals of the Faculty.
7. To foster a cooperative approach to multiprofessional educational activities within each hospital.
8. To serve as an educational resource for the Faculty of Medicine.
9. To provide ongoing support and consultation to the renewed undergraduate medical curriculum and other innovative programs.
10. To maintain a continuing commitment to support and assist in the evaluation of all innovative curricula undertaken by the Faculty.

The key to successful applied research projects is the maintenance of a consultative educational service. A search committee for the Director of the Centre will be approved by the Dean. The Centre will have an Advisory Board composed of representatives from the medical school, hospitals, and the Academy Directors. The Board will advise the Centre's director about decisions related to priorities and initiatives and how such decisions advance the Centre's role as a university academic unit.
