Image Description: From Thomas Bartholin, Historiarum anatomicarum & medicarum rariorum centuria V. & VI. Copenhagen, 1661. (jah)

A sinister but common sight on the streets of Venice during the epidemics of bubonic plague in the seventeenth century was the plague doctor. The costume, consisting of a tunic made from waxen cloth, a beak filled with spices and fragrant herbs, glasses, gloves, and a staff, was believed to protect the doctor from the "miasmas" of the dreaded disease
