Welcome to the Exhibition Website

In 2004, the University of Toront Llibrary's Staff Development Committee organized an exhibition called Staff Picks for Summer Reading. Full-time, part-time, and retired library staff were invited to recommend a book that they thought would be of interest to others. As a result, the Library has been organizing exhibitions of books recommended by UofT Library Staff ever since. The Seas of Ink Exhibition continues and builds from this first Library Staff exhibition.

General Information

All full-time, part-time and retired members from all Central Library Departments, Campus Libraries, RCAT, Information Commons, ATRC and the TCard Office are invited to submit a favourite book by a Canadian author.

Anything goes - fiction, non fiction, poetry, plays, science fiction, history, short stories, text books, etc. - as long as the ink/toner flowed from the pen/typewriter ribbon/printer of a Canadian.

To submit a book title click on the "Recommend a title" link to the left and fill in all the information. Remember to click the Submit button at the bottom of the page! We will notify you by email if we have any questions.

Please limit the combined length of your book description and recommendation to 250 words. The web goes on and on, but we have limited space in the exhibition cabinets.

If you are interested in volunteering to help with the exhibition, email Richard Hydal.

A Snapshot of Some Submissions

The Island Walkers byJohn Bemrose
"A wonderful evocation of life in 1960's Canada; quiet and desolate, with fully-formed characters and a subtle passion that infuses much of Canadian fiction."

Dark as the Grave by Malcolm Lowry
"From its interminable opening sentence (describing an unstoppable descent) to its oddly mystical conclusion (proposing a greater conscious control over one's life than previously considered) the novel is a spectacular essay on self doubt, denial, fear, alcoholism, dementia, the joy and lunacy of wandering thoughts, redemption and love. "

The Pornographer's Poem by Michael Turner
"This is an amazingly well crafted, hilarious and addictive book, which I couldn't put down once I started it!"
