Jeffery Donaldson was born in Toronto and educated at Victoria College, University of Toronto. He teaches poetry and American literature in the English Department at McMaster University, where he is involved in the Collected Works of Northrop Frye project (editing Frye's volume of 20th-century essays and a volume of essays on Frye and religion).

He lives in Hamilton's Westdale Village with his wife Annette Abma and children Miller and Cornelia.
